From trinket trading to hugging online friends IRL, the con showcased how welcoming, joyful, and supportive the romantasy community truly is.

📚 Indie authors are redefining the genre

Jenn highlights how indie writers are experimenting with older protagonists, fresh tropes, and bold worldbuilding — expanding what romantasy can be.

💘 Tropes, micro‑tropes, and the “Consent King”

Jenn shares her favorite micro‑trope: the fae‑wine‑drunk heroine and the love interest who refuses to kiss her until she’s sober.
“He really wants her… but he’s like, not until you’re sober.”

🍷 Bookish Wine creates immersive romantasy experiences

Jenn’s book + wine club pairs special‑edition romantasy novels with boutique wines, playlists, recipes, and even audiobook codes — a full sensory escape.

📖 Gargoyle romance + Sauvignon Blanc = perfection

🌍 The romantasy tent is BIG

R.J. and Jenn emphasize that romantasy includes romance‑forward, sci‑fi romance, cozy romantasy, monster romantasy — all of it belongs.

00:00:00 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Welcome to Must Luv Romantasy your podcast for recs and reviews of books and other content where love, magic, mayhem, and hot takes collide. I'm your host, Rose mary Jean-Louis, but call me R.J. I'm a lifelong sci fi and fantasy lover turned romantasy superfan. I love the genre so much I started two real life book clubs. Join in to get recommendations and reviews of the romantasy books worth obsessing over or not. I also include shows and other content, plus the occasional author chat. So grab your swords or your coffee and let's fall in love. One epic story at a time. Hey Book Besties, how are you doing? This is part two of our series on defining what romantasy is. What better place to get that answer than at Romantasy Con LA, which happened in February from an insider. Here's my conversation with Jenn Beach from Bookish Wine.com. I have the pleasure of welcoming to Must Luv Romantasy the fantastic Jenn Beach, who is the proprietor of Bookish Wine. And I found her on Instagram. So thank you for joining us, Jenn.

00:01:32 Jenn Beach: Oh my goodness, thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited to be here.

00:01:36 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Here's the fantastic thing about her. She attended Romantasy Con in California, and she so graciously agreed to be uh a little bit of our fly on the wall to tell us how it all went down. So, um, you attended of course, as a vendor for your luxury wine and book club. Bookish wine, of course. Talk a bit about that for a moment. Give us your bird's eye view of what it was like to be there.

00:02:11 Jenn Beach: Yes. So first of all, the hotel it was it was held. It was held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. And this is the most romantasy coded location I've ever seen. So it's over one hundred and twenty years old. There's gorgeous elements and art and sculptures all embedded throughout the whole hotel. Romantasy Con takes place all over the hotel, and there's several ballrooms and there's frescos and there's it's gorgeous. So it's completely you feel like completely immersed into the romantasy culture. And just like you walked into romantasy realms, just setting foot into the building. So it's a really special location. Um, and as I was an attendee, I was able to represent bookish wine in different places. It was absolutely amazing to see people that I've met online and worked with in different capacities and actually see them face to face and get to hug and connect and talk about our love of romantasy books. And so there's a really cool energy that, you know, that's buzzing around of people are all really excited to be there. They're very happy. They're very excited. There's people dressed up in all different capacities, some in full fairy wings and, um, they ears and full makeup and gowns, and then people wearing jeans and t shirts with bookish t shirts and, and all of that. So there's this really cool culture, um, of like acceptance and community. And there's this really fun element of trinket trading where people will will trade. They'll say like, hey, do you want to trade? I'm like, absolutely. So I brought stickers and I brought these little bookish wine mini menus just to share with people. And, um, people would, would, would bring like little bracelets and necklaces and bookmarks and ladies would crochet dragon wings and little bottles with, um, seashells. And it was really, really cool. It's like, kind of like the best possible elements of girlhood being together. And you know, everyone there, like, you know, if you are spending the time, the energy, the effort and the money to come to something like Romantasy Con, you know, there are people who truly love the genre. And a lot of us have read all the same, if not all, but so many of the same books. So you have this in common with people? I could go on and on, just the elements, the way it was. The organizers did. This was so gorgeous and organized and thoughtful and intentional. I love how they had in each of the ballrooms. Vendors and authors together, like integrated.

00:05:03 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Oh wow. Okay.

00:05:04 Jenn Beach: Vendors and authors separate, which really creates like a weird flow. They had everyone together so that there was all we. Every room was always busy and full of life. And, um, in addition to that aspect, there were workshops and panels with authors about ranging from all different topics. And every night there was a different event with, um, live music and DJ's and um, like there were henna artists and so just those really, really, really immersive experience. I could go on and on about how phenomenal I wouldn't, I mean, if I would recommend one event to go to, it would definitely be Romantasy Con in Los Angeles. I know there's also one in October in, um, in Florida as well, which I would love to attend.

00:05:53 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): To your point about that, I believe it's, uh, isn't it the, um, Fabled Fantasy, uh, events, uh, organizers who put this together and give people these just fantastic experiences, right?

00:06:12 Jenn Beach: Yes. It's they are amazing. Um, I've had the pleasure to like virtually meet and Sarah, who's one of the founders and she, um, I was able to donate to bookish wine boxes for a raffle and she allowed us to stick, um, to place these, like, bookish wine mini menus into the swag bags so that people got them. And it was just, it's really, really nice to see other small businesses be able to be a part that are in the romantic realm. Be able to participate in this. And so they did. Honestly, the logistics involved in an event like this are just enormous. And so they did a phenomenal job.

00:06:54 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Sounds like it was huge and definitely worth going to for you. Were there any authors that you had any meet cutes or something that happened where it was like, oh wow, I finally got to meet you and you got an autograph or some other fantastic interaction?

00:07:13 Jenn Beach: Yes. So I always, I cannot go to an authors booth without buying at least three of their books. And so I came home with sixty new books.

00:07:24 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Oh, Whoa!

00:07:26 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): That's that's a lot to read.

00:07:29 Jenn Beach: It's a, it's a lot. So, and, um, but I will say for authors to start off, um, with bookish one, we've had two releases December and then upcoming in March. And both of the featured authors were at Romantic Con in Los Angeles. So I was able to see J.R. Cathers, who was featured in our December, um, bookish Myinbox and then Lauren Sinatra was also there. Who was the author for the March release. It was phenomenal to see them in person and be able to chat and talk about their upcoming projects. And, um, I love like the whole mission of Bookish Wine is to amplify storytellers, be that authors, winemakers, creators, artists. It was phenomenal to see J.R. Cathers and Lauren Sanatra. And then historically, I was able to see one of my favorite authors, um, Victoria Aveline.

00:08:25 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Okay.

00:08:26 Jenn Beach: She wrote the, um, sci fi romance series, the Clecanian  series. And so that it was phenomenal. Okay, this is the story. That was the meet cute.

00:08:36 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Okay. Go ahead.

00:08:37 Jenn Beach: I walk up to her booth and I'm like, hi. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited to see you. And she's like, I know you. And I said, you do like.

00:08:48 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Shut the front door.

00:08:50 Jenn Beach: How do you know me? And she said, you make videos about my books. And I was like, you saw that? Like, how did you see that? Because it's from, I think I did some TikTok. I mean, on my personal account, I did some TikTok and Instagram videos just about how much I love her series. And I had no idea that she would recognize me or know me. And so I was like completely floored. It was like definitely a meet cute. And then I bought every single one of her books that she's ever written. So I came back with this huge stack of books and it's just that, you know, they say, okay, this is what I want to say. They say, never meet your heroes. Right.

00:09:31 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Right.

00:09:32 Jenn Beach: I did, and it was they were kinder, lovelier, more wonderful, more accepting and welcoming than you could imagine. So I'm so glad I did meet my heroes at Romantasy Con in LA because it truly was. People were so authors, Creators, attendees and business owners were so kind and warm and welcoming the people I interacted with. So it was like, it was wonderful to meet my heroes. And I was like, like they all surpassed my expectation of what I would expect. So it was wonderful.

00:10:08 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): And that's just a testament of how this community is and operates and interacts with each other, that it's a very welcoming community and a friendly community. And all the things that you were saying about exchanging bracelets and, and, uh, and just being kind to each other, crocheting, um, and then down to the authors themselves that there, there wasn't any, there weren't any airs about people or authors, you know, you can go up to them and talk to them and they're open and want to tell you about, you know, their books and just even want to talk to you in, in general. And that's again, a testament of how this community, the romance and romance fantasy, however you want to demarcate it all. I take it both hardcore romantasy about to get into the definition of that and romance, fantasy, sci fi, romance, all that stuff. I include them all in the tent, but it's that community, that whole big, broad community, that very caring and open with each other. And, and that that's why, um, it's such a, when you go out to these cons, uh, it's, it's such a joyful and fun event to go to because it's not only connecting with the authors and the vendors, but it's connecting with each other and you know that people are going to. To share the love, if you will, with each other. Let's segue then into that, because the thing that brings us all together is romantasy right? And this very, this unique genre that some people say, well, no, it's not so unique. It's been around for a while or whatever. Um, but it's bringing us together and we're, we're finding like everyone from the, the mail carrier to the bank teller to all these different people, you look up and it's like, hey, I read that book too. You know, I read a ACOTAR ACOTAR or a book in the Empyrean series. You know, those are typically the bestsellers kind of gateway drugs, if you will, that people love. And then there, there are a whole lot of other, other, more other books that, um, we could, we'll end up talking about it all day. If we start mentioning them. But, um, I'd love to find out from you. Then how did you become a romantasy fan? And. And then also define it for you.

00:12:57 Jenn Beach: Yes. I love this question. So I've been a fantasy fan since I was a child. Like Fairy Tales Chronicles of Narnia. Then later, Twilight. And as we moved forward, you know, a lot of different fantasy. And then even like, if you think about it, you know, Princess Bride in the nineteen eighties, I watched that movie and read the books, the book, and it was very like compelling and I adored it. I think I've read the book twenty times. And so I've always been a fan. But then as a formalized, a more commonly known genre romantasy um, I became very, very, very deep into the culture as far as reading and then becoming a mega fan and then small business owner. Um, my really good friend introduced me to ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas. Um, you know, I think it's about twenty twenty three. And so I started reading ACOTAR blew through that like just devoured it. Read all of Throne of Glass, Crescent City. Um, Rebecca Yarros and then I would read anything I could get my hands on. I did a ton of research. Like what about what to read next? And then I got really in, in the last couple of years into, um, romantic novels written by independent authors.

00:14:15 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Yes.

00:14:16 Jenn Beach: Have found just like the deep and abiding love. I love indie authors, I love traditionally published authors. And just getting really deep into this culture of like, wow, you know what? Just because a book isn't traditionally published doesn't mean that it's not good. Like, these indie authors have so much creative freedom and ability to experiment and have these really new ideas. And so, um, Last year, I fell in love with, um, the indie author, romance author Kara Reynolds.

00:14:52 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): And I was about to ask you, okay, you gotta share what some of these authors are like that are on your TBR. So keep tell us some more about, um, Reynolds.

00:15:03 Jenn Beach: Yes. So Reynolds is an indie author and her first book is priestess. And I stumbled upon it on Instagram Bookstagram. This is what I'm talking about with indie authors being able to experiment and just have this whole beautiful thing that's so different. The main characters in her books are in their late thirties and early 40s. And so I love, love, love this. And so it's like they've experienced life, they've seen things. They're, you know, they've gone through divorce and there's magic and there's, you know, there's honestly one of the most beautiful romance stories. I would definitely say it's romance. It's romance with or fantasy with romance. And, um, I think with romantic lovers, we can kind of, um, lump things together or split them apart. Right? So that people can get nitty gritty about, oh, is this fantasy romance? Is this romance with fantasy? And then all the subgenres, I think we can all we can bring it together. We can get really nitty gritty. You know, there's all these different subgenres like dark romance and monster romantic and cozy romantic. But. Karen Reynolds is one of one of the first indie authors I really read and just deeply fell in love with her, with her characters in the story. And, um, now she's, um, releasing book three in their internal standalones.

00:16:31 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Wow.

00:16:32 Jenn Beach: And so I adore her. Um, J.R. Cathers, um, she wrote Child of Shivay, which was released last fall and then was featured in our, um, December box. And that's like an epic fantasy with romance, with intrigue, with mystery, with just a lot of really beautiful fantasy elements. And so, I mean, I could go on and on. We'd be here all day talking about these things.

00:17:00 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): And I totally get it. Um, again, it's all about the love, right? Because it's a romantasy and to your point, uh, but what I also evangelize about that, it's one big tent that sure, we found a title like for the genre that it's romantasy. Okay, love it, love it. Great way to put the imprint market on it and so forth. But it also encompasses all these other interconnected genres, sci fi and again, romance fantasy where it might be a little bit lighter in terms of the romance, but that element is in there. so, you know, we shouldn't. To me, there shouldn't be like a definite purist situation going on that. Oh, it's because it's not purely that the romance and the fantasy are equal, which is, uh, which tends to be the main definition that the romance and the fantasy both drive the plot. That's great. We get it. But just because, uh, you know, another story isn't plotted out like that doesn't mean it's not part of the tent and it shouldn't be included in that. If you go to, say, a Romantasy Con that somebody who's sitting in the corner reading a book that's maybe more fantasy than romance and just has a, you know, smaller elements of the romance in it that you should be telling them you need to leave the con now you know.

00:18:33 Jenn Beach: Exactly, exactly.

00:18:36 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): And, and also, uh, it's all within the authors. It's great about the experimentation and kind of veering away from the typical tropes that we find, which is typically like, it's, it's usually some young human woman who's, you know, just barely out of their teenage years who falls in love with a thousand year old, uh, fey werewolf, you know, fill that in and, and, you know, their enemies to lovers or slow burn or whatever. And it's like, because we're suspending belief, it's, you know, it's fantasy, it's the romance we get into it. But then sometimes we, we sit back and we're like, wait a minute, she's only eighteen. He's been alive for centuries. How is that going to work? And so I love that, that with the newer books, um, with the indie authors that they're like, you know, breaking down those typical tropes and including people who, who are Older and who have jobs, divorces and stuff. It kind of reminds me of, um, when we. I'm also a comic fan, comic book fan. And when we do that, talk about DC versus Marvel. Now, you know, full disclosure, I like them both. But you know, the difference rather between the two was always that with Marvel, the characters had like real life challenges and problems. Like Spider-Man. He had to work as a photographer to make money and stuff, you know? Um, Iron Man had a drinking problem, you know, all all those kind of things that made it, um, interesting. We talked a little bit as you were talking about the indie authors, about how they were kind of, uh, turning those tropes on their ear. Are there any particular tropes that that really get you excited? I'm a slow burn, romance type person.

00:20:33 Jenn Beach: If you love slow burn romance, you're going to love Bound by Hearts and Stone by Lauren Sanatra So that is like slow burn it is. MM. It's delicious. You're gonna love it. And it's, it's very like romance centered with fantasy elements. Um, you're gonna love it for me. I will be honest with you. I am very easily pleased. So, like, I book with the book. So I love so many aspects. I think the one that will always get my like toe, my feet kicking is and I'm, I'm literally shocked every single time is the, the, you know, enemies to lovers. You're like, I sure love, I love that I love, I also love the mate bond. So either fated mates or chosen mates, which, um, one of the books that I'm really into right now has this whole chosen mate. And then they can create choose the mate bond, which I really love.

00:21:32 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, I haven't come across too many of those. Most of the ones that I've found that I've come across are, are the just the fated mates, not the chosen faded mates. That's that's interesting. Okay, I want to I want to look at your TBR list to find to go through what I should be reading in terms of that type of joke.

00:21:55 Jenn Beach: So this is definitely this is the chosen meets, this is our, um, our March release, but it's oh my gosh, it's so good. It's so beautiful. And it's, yeah, I love, it's unique. It's an indie. It's Lauren Sanatra actually a hybrid author. She does have one published book and then several indie books. But would you like to hear my, um, my favorite micro trope?

00:22:17 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Sure. Before you tell us, tell us again, what is the name of that book by, um, the Sanatra, um, remembering her last name, but not her first name.

00:22:28 Jenn Beach: So yes, in the bookish Wine March release, it's, um, it's like exclusive special edition. This is "Bound by Hearts and Stone" and Lauren Sanatra and Tales from the Obsidian Mountains. So these are all. This is the first in a series of interconnected standalones and it is a gargoyle. Speaking of subgenres, a gargoyle romance with the monster elements are very subtle, very gentle. It's like really great for an introduction to monster romantasy. It's not scary.

00:23:00 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Excellent. So you were you were going to tell us about your mini trope because there are so many tropes, so little time, right? Yes. What is that favorite mini trope?

00:23:11 Jenn Beach: Okay, so it's really specific. So there's a a human woman and she drinks Fairy wine and or some sort of magical wine. And in it it's, it's special. It's magical. So it has, it makes humans more intoxicated than regular human wine. So she drinks some wine, a little bit of wine, but it's like it's her human body isn't processing it as well as the fae And so then she approaches the male love interest and she says, like, I want to kiss. Like I want to be intimate. And he's like, no, no, because he's like, you can't consent. You're drunk. And what? He really wants her, he really wants her. He really wants to be with her. But and she's like throwing herself at him, but he's like, not until you're sober. But he's like, you know, that's my favorite. It's like happened in a couple books I've read. It's my favorite little micro trope.

00:24:06 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Kind of the responsible mate here that you're not until you're sober. Let's let's get you some coffee.

00:24:15 Jenn Beach: Yeah. It's like I'd like to call him, like the Consent King.

00:24:19 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Consent King.

00:24:21 Jenn Beach: Yes.

00:24:22 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Love it, love it. Okay, tell us about the club and how people can get involved with it. Tell us about. Of course, its origin story. Like if you were a comic book character or, you know, romantic. Character, right?

00:24:37 Jenn Beach: Yes, yes. So bookish wine is a marriage of passions of like. Fine. Boutique. Um, really special small lot production wine with romantic books and special edition romantic. And so it's a marriage of two passions. And over time, um, over the last twenty years, I've been able to visit five hundred wineries and read over three hundred romantasy books. Bookish wine is a club that what we do is we fall in love with a book, we create a special edition of the book, and then we work directly with authors and winemakers to find a wine that perfectly pairs with the ambiance, the themes, the vibes, and the characters of the story. So our mission is to amplify storytellers, and by that we mean authors, winemakers, artists. And so every quarter, every three months, a bookish wine member will receive an exclusive special edition book paired with a specific wine that's inspired by the story and the wines only available with bookish wine. And then also in the box you're getting. We wanted to create a fully immersive romantasy experience, so you're also getting recipes that are specifically paired with the wine in the book. Oh yeah, Spotify playlists created by the authors. And then the really exciting part of the March release is that the author, Lauren Sanatra, offered to include audiobook codes. So you get the wine with the with the artist label, the book, an audiobook, the Spotify playlist, recipes, bookmarks. We're going to give some wine education, some super fun. A map of the wine region and telling you step by step why we're pairing. The book and the wine together. So in addition to all these elements, we have. A reusable treasure box that opens like a book and it safely houses the book. And the wine and all the special edition elements in there. So people, what's really fun. Circling back to Romantasy Con is a lot of bookish wine members have said that they're. Um, with the box, they're going to use it as a treasure chest to put in bookmarks and wine corks and all these stickers and things that we get at the book cans to kind of like help them and keep them safe. So it is, it has been absolutely amazing from a community perspective to work directly with authors and winemakers to create this really immersive and unique, um, romantic experience because there's so many incredible book boxes. Um, but this is the only wine and book club that comes to you. That's delivered to your doorstep. We ship to most of the US states. So it's really the intention is to really have this very immersive and magical. Um, escape.

00:27:40 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): And I love that you address different ways that people read, um, that I'm more of an audiobook person. Um, these days because, uh, in, uh, where I live in the Decatur, Georgia area, which is close to Atlanta. Uh, Atlanta is well known for high traffic. So it's always helpful for me to be able to play my books as I'm driving along. And then during the weekends, I play my books as I'm doing housework and stuff, and sometimes I'll switch back and forth between the hardcover version and the audio version. But I really love the dramatizations. So love that you include that code to get an audiobook. Love Spotify, too, because that's also part of the experience. To get a playlist that puts you in the mood and gets you into that vibe. And the maps, I mean, you really, really thought this through. Um, on how to put these experiences together for people. So that's really, really pretty exciting. And so what, um, for the month of March, um, is it a red wine or white wine or kind of a different, uh, kind of a, I don't know, a mixture or rosé, I don't know.

00:29:01 Jenn Beach: It is a Rutherford Valley Sauvignon Blanc, and it is from this award winning region where the Sauvignon Blancs go from seventy five to one hundred and fifty dollars. And so we're able to like, have this like really beautiful high end, like gorgeous wine that's included. And, um, I will be honest with you, I've drank thousands of varietals, thousands of types of wine. If I had to drink one white wine the rest of my life, it would be this one. So, um, it's weird. We're calling. We we titled it, um, with our own exclusive label. It's not available anywhere else. Um, it's the, it's the main character of "Bound by Hearts and Stone". So nice Sauvignon Blanc twenty twenty four and it is literally, it is gorgeous. So, um, December we had a, a Malbec, a red wine and um, for spring, we just really feel like this. The reason we chose this blanc from Rutherford is it really pairs with the vibes of "Bound by Hearts and Stone". It has like this soft sweetness, but also fullness and roundness. And I could go on and on, but it is complex, it's delicious, it's complex, and it's really well balanced. So I think for people who like red or white wine, this is like The perfect wine because it is. It's approachable, but it also is sophisticated enough. Like. Like for people who are new to wine. They will love it. And then people who are wine experts, like sommeliers, will love it because it does have subtlety, nuance, and like the book, like the book does.

00:30:42 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): It sounds pretty delicious and delightful and is the type of thing that you would pair with a nice summer day on a weekend to just sit in your backyard, pull out that wine, pull out that book, um, make the recipe or have made the recipe the day before so you can enjoy the wine. Uh, the book, uh, what you're eating all together and have that, that complete, uh, fantasy escape experience. So thank you for painting a wonderful visual for us before we go. How can people connect with you?

00:31:21 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Yes.

00:31:22 Jenn Beach: We are on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, our main channels are Instagram and TikTok and our website is bookish wine.com. So, um, I am the owner and the founder and the curator. And so I love talking to romantic and wine lovers and, um, you know, you can DM me, you can email me from the website. And so, um, that's where I can be found.

00:31:52 R.J. (Rosemary Jean-Louis): Excellent. So we, we have all these options. So that's, that's great because some people are on social media, some are not.
